Start to Finish
Watch me create a piece from start to completion. This
sculpture, A
Summer Place, was awarded Best of Classification at Santa Fe Indian
Market in the Alan Houser Monumental Sculpture Competition.

1. After sketching my idea on paper, I do a line drawing of the proposed sculpture directly onto the stone. This piece of limestone was already cut in a rectangular shape when I bought it. The beginning stage you see is the initial cutting of the stone that begins describing the form. |

2. Here I am carving the outline of the sculpture with an air hammer and chisel.

3. The form becomes more 3-dimensional as all the flat surfaces are penetrated when I carve along the sketched lines. Using headphones protects my ears from the loud hammering of the air tools.

4. You can see the form being revealed as I carve deeper into the stone and sculpt the surfaces. At this point I am beginning to see my original idea take a rough shape. |

5. As I continue carving into the stone, more details are revealed. This is
a very exciting stage because the figure is becoming life-like. |

6. In this close-up of the finished piece, you can see the applied textures. The final form is revealed dramatically as the natural light creates shadows on the surfaces. |

7. A marvelous transformation takes place as a hard, cold stone appears to take on the life of the figure it represents, and looks wonderfully soft and warm. |
