Sculpture Tools
 |
After the stone has been roughed out with saws, a basic form
is chiseled with pneumatic and hand chisels of various sizes. This
beginning step defines the form by giving the flat surface depth. |
 |
Many of James' ideas come from his sketches. That sketch is
drawn again directly onto the stone. A die grinder is often used for an
outline, or as a carving instrument for negative spaces or details. |
 |
Files may be used at different stages of carving to sculpt
the form of a piece. Files are also used to create textured lines for
detail in hair, clothing, feathers, and such. The file's size, shape, and
teeth determine the depth of lines applied to a sculpture's surface. |
 |
Once the form is complete, details are applied with knives
and a Dremel tool using various bits.
Here the knife was used to carve facial features, jewelry, clothing, and
drum detail. A large brush is used to whisk away carving dust at various
stages of the piece's creation.. |
