After the stone has been roughed out with saws, a basic form is chiseled with pneumatic and hand chisels of various sizes. This beginning step defines the form by giving the flat surface depth.
Many of James' ideas come from his sketches. That sketch is drawn again directly onto the stone. A die grinder is often used for an outline, or as a carving instrument for negative spaces or details. 
Files may be used at different stages of carving to sculpt the form of a piece. Files are also used to create textured lines for detail in hair, clothing, feathers, and such. The file's size, shape, and teeth determine the depth of lines applied to a sculpture's surface. 
Once the form is complete, details are applied with knives and a Dremel tool using various bits. Here the knife was used to carve facial features, jewelry, clothing, and drum detail. A large brush is used to whisk away carving dust at various stages of the piece's creation..
